Superfood Detox Smoothie

One of my friends recently told me she was looking forward to a recipe that was kind of “out of the ordinary”. In my post on the Dressing-less Mango-Avocado Salad I promised to give you a recipe that would surprise you. Therefore, today I present to you the Superfood Detox Green Smoothie. This thing is LOADED with superfoods! It tastes like cinnamon-spiced applesauce, and is perfect for a chilly, fall morning.

Apples have a low glycemic index which means that they absorb sugar slowly (versus quickly) into the bloodstream, preventing a sugar spike from happening. This provides you with long-lasting energy. There’s a substance in the skin of the apple that contains anti-inflammatory properties, so buy organic apples and keep the skin on. Anti-cancer properties are found in the seeds of the apple, so don’t shy away from throwing those in the smoothie as well.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away… But if the doctor is cute, forget the fruit!” 😉

We all know oranges are a good source of vitamin C, but I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the recycling of vitamin C in our body depends on the presence of certain antioxidant-boosting compounds. Apples do an amazing job of providing us with those compounds. That being said, apples and oranges make a great combo.

I could detail into the health benefits of all the ingredients found in this green smoothie recipe, but then this post would become much too long. Before I give you the recipe, however, I want to say a little something about chlorella, which is what makes this smoothie green. (By now you know I <3 green smoothies!)

Chlorella is a very special detoxifying agent and here’s why: It binds to heavy metals, chemicals, and pesticides and carries them out of your system. It does not, however, bind to the minerals your body naturally needs to function optimally. In other words, it gives you the best of both worlds. It cleanses your bowels, protects your liver, and promotes clean blood. It’s an absolute energy-booster. Made up of 50% plant-based protein, it is an excellent way for vegans/vegetarians to get all their amino acids in.

For those who don’t eat honey (it’s not truly vegan), go ahead and sub it for maple syrup. Both sweeteners have excellent health benefits related to them.

I hope I have convinced you to try this smoothie. Leave a comment (feedback is so encouraging!), share this with a friend, and follow me on social media. See you again tomorrow for a delicious salad!
